Tlacuache

Nombre científico: Didelphys marsupialis
Otros nombres: tlacuatzin – pequeño que come fuego (náhuatl)

El tlacuache es el único marsupial  nativo de México, se encuentra en zonas templadas y tropicales del país, se ven seguido en zonas urbanas ya que es uno de los animales que mejor se adaptan a la vida cerca del hombre. Es una especie considerada de Preocupación Menor y solo en Quintana Roo y Campeche cuentan con áreas protegidas.

Su dieta es omnívora ya que se alimentan de cualquier cosa, desde frutos, insectos, huevos, reptiles, anfibios, gallinas, hasta desperdicios producidos por el hombre.

Estos mamíferos tienen un marsupio donde terminan de incubar a sus crías para después pasar al lomo de la madre. Son inofensivos e incapaces de transmitir o incubar rabia. Tienen mala vista y son lentos, su cola es larga y les sirve para sujetarse a los árboles; cuando se sienten amenazados fingen su muerte y sueltan un olor fuerte, a éste comportamiento se le llama tanatosis.

The tlacuache is the only marsupial native to Mexico, it is found in temperate and tropical zones of the country, they are often in urban areas because it is one of the animals best adapted to live near man. It is a species considered of Least Concern and only in Quintana Roo and Campeche have protected areas.

Their diet is omnivorous since they feed on anything, from fruits, insects, eggs, reptiles, amphibians, chickens, to man-made waste.

These mammals have a pouch where they finish incubate their young and then move to the back of the mother.

 They are harmless and unable to transmit or incubate rabies. They have poor eyesight and are slow, their tail is long and they use it to attach from trees; when they feel threatened they pretend their death and release a strong smell, this behavior is called tanatosis.
